Helena Farrand Carrapico is a Professor of International Relations and European Politics at Northumbria University and holds the Jean Monnet Chair. She also serves as Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange for the Social Sciences Department. Her work focuses on European security governance, including internal security policies, cybersecurity, Brexit's impact, and migration externalization. Carrapico holds a PhD from the European University Institute (2010) and an MA from the College of Europe. Previously, she was a Senior Lecturer at Aston University and held academic positions at Dundee University, James Madison University, and others. She has been a visiting fellow at the European Commission and CEPS.
Research Interests: Her research spans four key areas: 1) governance of organized crime and cybersecurity within EU internal security; 2) external dimensions of EU security policies; 3) post-Brexit UK-EU security relations; and 4) modes of governance like privatization and agencification. Her work critiques policy externalization and its socio-political consequences.
Awards & Roles: She is a BISA Elected Trustee (2022-2024) and co-editor of the UACES/Routledge Series on Contemporary European Studies. Her scholarship appears in top journals like the Journal of Common Market Studies and International Affairs.
Teaching: She teaches courses on European security governance, negotiation simulations (IR7011/AT7038), and dissertation guidance (SO6002). She supervises PhD students like Konstantinos Manakos on digital sovereignty.
Grants & Impact: Her research on Frontex, EU cybersecurity, and migration externalization has shaped policy discourse. She frequently engages with EU institutions and advises on security governance challenges.
