Professor Richard G. Whitman is a Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent's School of Politics and International Relations. He also serves as a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and an Academic Fellow at the European Policy Centre. Previously, he held roles such as Professor of Politics at the University of Bath (2006–2011) and Head of the European Programme at Chatham House (2004–2006). His research focuses on UK and EU foreign, security, and defence policies, particularly post-Brexit dynamics, EU global engagement, and comparative foreign policy analysis.
Key awards include Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (2007) and leadership roles in UACES (2009–2012) and BISA (2017–2018). He leads an ESRC-funded project on 'Securing Global Britain' and has authored/edited over 30 books and 60+ articles. His recent work addresses EU-Ukraine relations, Global Britain's strategic challenges, and EU security cooperation post-Brexit.
Teaching includes courses like POLI5660 'Europe and the World,' and he supervises PhD students on topics like Iran’s nuclear program and Brexit’s impact on UK foreign policy. Media engagements include BBC, CNN, and Wall Street Journal commentary on European integration and UK-EU relations.
