Dr. Kathryn Simpson is an Associate Professor in Politics & Economics of the European Union at Keele Business School, serving as Director of Research and Deputy Director of the Keele Institute for Social Inclusion (KISI). Her expertise spans Ireland-EU relations, Brexit impacts, and political behavior in the EU/UK/Ireland context. She holds a PhD from the University of Kent, an MA from the University of Bath/Sciences-Po Paris, and a BA from Queen’s University Belfast.
Research interests include Ireland’s EU membership dynamics, post-Brexit British-Irish relations, and public opinion on EU integration. She has authored/co-authored books such as Nationalism in Internationalism: Ireland’s Relationship with the European Union (2023) and Ireland and the European Union: Economic, Political and Social Crises (2021). Her work appears in journals like Journal of European Public Policy and Irish Political Studies.
Dr. Simpson is a frequent media commentator on EU/UK/Irish politics, including live coverage of the 2024 UK General Election for RTE and BBC roles (2016–2019). She previously held academic roles at Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester, and the University of Kent. Leadership roles include Deputy Director of the Manchester Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and Elected Secretary of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES).
Her research leadership focuses on PhD supervision in areas like conceptualizing Brexit, inequality in global contexts, Euroscepticism, and Irish politics. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and affiliated with the Political Studies Association.
