Simon Tans is a Lecturer in Environmental Law at the Law Group of Wageningen University & Research. He holds a PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen, focusing on international trade law, EU law, and implementation of trade commitments. His research addresses how international trade obligations interact with environmental protection and climate change initiatives, particularly the EU Green Deal. He has led two expert studies for the EU Commission and presented to the WTO as an expert.

Research Interests: Simon’s work bridges legal frameworks (EU/WTO law) with environmental sustainability. He critically examines how trade policies hinder or enable climate action, with recent focus on circular economy transitions via projects like CircuLaw. His scholarship spans legal analysis of free trade agreements and their impact on green policies.
Teaching & Innovation: He teaches International Public Law, WTO Law, and EU Administrative Law. As former board member of the Radboud Teaching and Learning Centre, he pioneered educational tools like the Law in Action honours programme, online exam systems without video surveillance, and a curriculum-integrated learning app.
Projects: Leads CircuLaw, exploring legal frameworks for circular economy transitions. Engaged in designing transformative governance models for sustainability through courses like YSS40806.
