Professor Simon Park is an Associate Professor in Medieval and Renaissance Portuguese and Academic Lead for EDI in the Humanities Division at the University of Oxford. He is affiliated with St Anne's College and the Faculty of Medieval & Modern Languages. His research focuses on the history, literature, and visual arts of the Portuguese-speaking world in the Early Modern period, challenging traditional narratives of imperialism through works like his upcoming book Wreckers: Disaster in the Age of Discovery (Penguin/Viking, 2025). He has authored Poets, Patronage, and Print in Sixteenth-Century Portugal: From Paper to Gold (OUP, 2021) and co-edited Mário de Sá-Carneiro, A Cosmopolitan Modernist (2016).
Professor Park teaches Portuguese literature at various Oxford colleges, specializing in medieval and early modern periods, and leads translation courses. He established the Early Career Network for Modern Linguists (2019) and chaired the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize (2019–2020). His work has been recognized with the 2020 Juan Facundo Riaño Essay Medal for art historical scholarship on Portuguese Renaissance silverwork.
In research, Park emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, exploring topics such as colonial resistance, gender intersections, and postcolonial critiques. His articles span literary analysis, cultural history, and visual studies, with contributions to journals like Renaissance Studies and Exemplaria. He also engages in public outreach, including a 2019 fellowship at the Ashmolean Museum to develop courses linking visual culture and empire narratives.
