Simon P. Hogan is Professor of Pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School and the Askwith Research Professor of Food Allergy at the Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center. He also serves as Co-Director of the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Graduate Program within the Department of Pathology.
Dr. Hogan completed doctoral research at the Australian National University focusing on cytokine regulation of allergic inflammation, followed by post-doctoral training at Cincinnati Children's Hospital studying eosinophils in gastrointestinal diseases. He joined Cincinnati Children's faculty in 2004 before moving to the University of Michigan in 2018.
His research defines cellular and molecular interactions at the immune-gastrointestinal epithelial interface under homeostasis and disease. The Hogan Laboratory utilizes systems-level approaches with patient cohorts to identify immunological elements linked to allergic disease symptoms, employing advanced experimental tools to uncover fundamental immune mechanisms.
Dr. Hogan's work spans immunology and allergy research with emphasis on food allergy mechanisms, recently publishing in Nature Review Immunology about food antigen exposure routes and mast cell-mediated allergic reactions.
- NHMRC CJ Martin Traveling Fellowship
- Young Investigator Awards from CCFA
- NIH funding
His research is funded by NIH, CCFA, and FARE, supporting translation of pre-clinical findings into patient-based studies of immune-mediated diseases. He mentors graduate students including Jazib Uddin and Amnah Yamani.
At the University of Michigan, he leads a laboratory focused on pathways regulating innate and adaptive immune cell function at barrier surfaces in health and disease contexts.
