Simon J. Brandl is a researcher affiliated with James Cook University, Australia, where he completed his PhD under Prof. David Bellwood. His work focuses on coral reef ecosystems, herbivorous fish behavior, and the impacts of climate change. He holds a BSc from the University of Innsbruck and an MAppSc in Marine Biology from JCU.
His research investigates functional niche partitioning among herbivorous reef fishes, exploring how their behaviors and morphologies influence coral reef resilience. Key interests include micro-topography effects on coral-algal interactions and long-term ecosystem dynamics. Simon has been recognized with several awards, including the Bommies Award (2013) and Young Science Ambassador Award (2013).
Simon’s publications span topics such as functional ecology, fish behavior, and evolutionary adaptations. He has presented at major conferences like the Australian Coral Reef Society Symposium and the Indo-Pacific Fish Conference. His research contributes to understanding reef resilience in the face of climate change.
