Simon Gadbois

Simon Gadbois is a University Teaching Fellow in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University. He holds a PhD from Dalhousie and an undergraduate degree from the University of Moncton. His primary research focuses on wildlife conservation using sniffer dogs, olfactory processing in canids, and biomedical applications of canine scent detection. He leads the Wildlife Ethology & Canine Olfaction Lab, which has used dogs to study species-at-risk reptiles and mammals, as well as medical conditions like diabetes and PTSD.

Dr. Gadbois teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in animal behavior, learning theory, and behavioral biology. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the Dalhousie Alumni Association Award (2011) and the UNS Professor of the Year (2024–2025). His lab collaborates with organizations like the MFFP, Parks Canada, and the Canadian Forest Service on conservation projects.

His media work includes over 150 interviews and documentaries on coyotes, wolves, and conservation dogs. Recent talks span international conferences in the US, UK, Italy, and Poland, focusing on canine behavior, olfaction, and ethical breeding practices.

Key scientific contributions include studies on stress detection in humans via dogs, biomedical alert systems, and the integration of olfactory neuroscience with ethology. The lab’s team includes dozens of undergraduate and graduate students, many involved in fieldwork and canine training.
