Friederike Range is a Full Professor and Head of the Domestication Lab at the Konrad Lorenz Institute of Ethology, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. Her research focuses on animal cognition and behavior, particularly domestication effects in dogs and wolves, cooperative behavior, and human-animal relationships. She co-directs the Wolf Science Center, a facility dedicated to studying canids under controlled conditions. Range holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Habilitation in Ethology from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.
Her key projects include investigating problem-solving in canids, human attitudes toward wolves/dogs, and domestication hypotheses. She teaches courses on animal behavior and canine cognition, supervises students, and collaborates internationally. Awards include the APA’s Distinguished Scientific Award (2012) and Vienna’s Förderpreis (2010).
Research spans fieldwork in Africa, domestication comparisons, and urban wildlife adaptation. Her work bridges evolutionary biology, psychology, and applied ethics, emphasizing the socioecological context of animal behavior.
