Simeon Man is a Professor of History at the University of California San Diego, specializing in 20th-century race and empire studies. His work bridges American Studies, Asian American Studies, and comparative ethnic studies, with a focus on militarism, decolonization, and transpacific histories. He holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University (2012) and previously served as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern and a Provost’s Postdoctoral Scholar at USC.
His research examines U.S. military engagements in Asia/Pacific, particularly the Vietnam War era, and their intersections with global decolonization. His award-winning book Soldiering through Empire (2018) analyzes how Pacific Islanders and Asian soldiers shaped U.S. imperial projects. Current book projects address antimilitarism in Pacific islands and the transpacific nuclear industry’s history.
Teaching focuses include Asian American history, U.S. imperialism, and Pacific World studies. He directs UCSD’s Asian American & Pacific Islander Studies Program and is affiliate faculty in Ethnic Studies and Critical Gender Studies. Awards include the OAH Distinguished Lecturer designation and a 2019 DEI Teaching Award for integrating community-based oral history projects.
