Ian Shin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of History and is Core Faculty in Asian/Pacific Islander American (A/PIA) Studies. His research focuses on Asian American history and the U.S. Pacific World between 1850-1950, informed by critical race and ethnic studies frameworks.

Research interests include transpacific cultural exchanges, art collecting's role in American imperialism, and marginalized histories like interracial adoption during the Exclusion Era. His current book project examines early 20th-century Chinese art collecting in the U.S. Recent work spans Boy Scout movements in Chinatown, university roles in Sino-U.S. relations, and Detroit's Asian American ethnoburbs.
Publications combine historical analysis with contemporary relevance, often bridging academia and public engagement through his co-hosted Asian American studies podcast.
