Dr. Silvia Melgar is a Senior Research Fellow and funded investigator at APC Microbiome Ireland, affiliated with University College Cork (UCC). She holds a PhD in Immunology from Umea University (Sweden) and has extensive postdoctoral experience at AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline. Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms in intestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colon cancer, and metabolic conditions, using in vitro, ex vivo organoid models, and in vivo preclinical systems. Key areas of investigation include the roles of inflammation, diet, and microbiota-derived metabolites on intestinal health.
Her work is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, Health Research Board (HRB), Irish Research Council (IRC), and the European Commission (Horizon Europe). Notable achievements include a h-index of 36 and over 70 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Cell Death and Disease, Mucosal Immunology, and Nature Communications.
Research highlights include studies on cytokine interactions (e.g., TNF-α and IFN-γ), DNA sensor signaling in ulcerative colitis, and the impact of dietary components on microbiota and immune function. She leads projects exploring therapeutic strategies targeting the gut microbiome and inflammatory pathways.
Dr. Melgar collaborates with APC Microbiome Ireland and industry partners to translate findings into clinical applications, emphasizing translational research in gastrointestinal diseases.
