Aonghus Lavelle is a Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience at University College Cork (UCC) and a researcher at APC Microbiome Ireland. His research focuses on the gut microbiota’s role in inflammatory and immunological disorders, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He completed clinical training in gastroenterology alongside a PhD investigating gut microbiota in ulcerative colitis under Prof. Ronan O’Connell. He held postdoctoral fellowships in Cork and Paris, studying gut virome dynamics and fungal-bacterial microbiome interactions in health/disease.
Research interests include host-microbe interactions, microbiome-based diagnostics, and therapeutic strategies targeting the gut-brain axis. His work spans clinical, translational, and basic science, with a focus on multi-omics approaches and disease prognostics. Collaborations include APC Microbiome Ireland, Teagasc, and international institutions.
Key contributions involve linking microbiota alterations to immunological pathways in IBD, Alzheimer’s disease, and post-COVID-19 inflammation. Articles highlight interdisciplinary approaches to understanding microbiome impacts on neurology, metabolism, and cancer. Current projects address dietary influences, exercise effects on microbiota-neurogenesis links, and regulatory challenges in microbiome testing.
