Sigrid M. Adriaenssens is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University, where she directs the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education, the Program in Technology and Society, and the Program in Entrepreneurship. Her research focuses on lightweight surface systems optimized for extreme structural or environmental loading, with applications in adaptive shading devices, inflatable storm surge barriers, and metamaterials inspired by biology, art, and architecture.
- Ph.D. in Lightweight Structures, University of Bath (2000)
- M.Phil. in Lightweight Structures, University of Bath (1997)
- B.Eng. in Civil/Structural Engineering, University of Bath (1995)
Her interdisciplinary work integrates analytical mechanics, numerical form-finding, machine learning, and experimental prototyping using CAD/CAM and robotic construction. She explores interactions between structural systems and fluid dynamics for resilient urban environments.
Her scientific accolades include the ASCE George Winter Award (2018), Barry Onouye Endowed Visiting Chair (2019), and Princeton University's Alfred Rheinstein Award (2015). She leads the ASCE Aesthetics in Design Committee and chairs the IASS Working Group 5 on Shells.
