Maria E. Moreyra Garlock is the Daniel Tsui Professor in Engineering at Princeton University, where she also serves as Co-Director of the Architecture and Engineering Program. She is affiliated with the School of Architecture and the Program in Latin American Studies, and holds the position of Head of Forbes College.
- PhD Structural Engineering, Lehigh University (2002)
- MS Civil Engineering, Cornell University (1993)
- BS Civil and Environmental Engineering, Lehigh University (1991)
Her research focuses on advancing structural engineering design for extreme loads (e.g., earthquakes, fires, storm surges) and exploring the intersection of engineering and the arts. She emphasizes resilience against isolated and cascading multi-hazard events, as well as pedagogical innovations for teaching structural concepts to both STEM and non-STEM students.
Recent work includes collaborations on climate adaptation and coastal flood resilience, such as the Floating City project. She has received prestigious awards for her teaching and research contributions, including the T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award and ASCE-SEI Fellow recognition.
- Fellow of the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute (SEI)
- T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award
- President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching (2012)
- Lawrence Keyes, Jr./Emerson Electric Co. Faculty Advancement Award (2006)
- 2021 ASCE-SEI Moisseif Award
- 2023 NSF BRITE Award
Garlock’s educational initiatives include courses like Structures and the Urban Environment and Advanced Design of Steel and Concrete Structures, alongside public exhibitions and MOOCs. She actively mentors students and collaborates with faculty across disciplines to enhance structural safety and pedagogy.
