Sieglinde Gstöhl (LI) is the Director of the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges, a position she has held since 2010. Since 2005, she has been a full-time Professor at the College, specializing in EU external relations, trade policy, and global governance. Previously, she served as Assistant Professor of International Relations at Humboldt University Berlin (1999–2005) and held post-doctoral and research roles at institutions like the Liechtenstein-Institut and Harvard University.
Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. in political science and an MA in International Relations from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, alongside a lic.rer.publ. HSG in Public Affairs from the University of St. Gallen. She has contributed to European affairs through professional roles such as work with the EFTA Secretariat and involvement in national referendum campaigns.
Professor Gstöhl’s research focuses on EU external relations, particularly trade policy, the European Neighbourhood Policy, and small-state diplomacy. Her work explores regional integration theories, global governance frameworks, and the EU’s evolving role in international institutions. She has published extensively on these topics, including co-editing special journal issues and authored monographs that analyze EU strategic positioning in global and regional contexts.
