Simon Schunz is a Professor in the EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies (IRD) Department at the College of Europe. He also holds a Visiting Professor position at KU Leuven and is an Associate Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS. His career includes roles as a Scientific Officer at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (2011-2015), and academic coordination of the joint College of Europe-The Fletcher School 'Master of Arts in Transatlantic Affairs' (2016-2021).
Dr. Schunz’s research focuses on the EU’s external action and environmental sustainability, with special emphasis on climate policy, EU-US relations, multilateral governance, and global environmental diplomacy. He has published extensively in journals like Journal of European Integration, The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, and Environmental Politics, and authored/co-authored books on EU foreign policy dynamics.
His academic qualifications include a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from KU Leuven and an M.A. from the College of Europe, complemented by studies in Political Science, American Studies, and Public Law across institutions in Germany, France, and Belgium. His work bridges theoretical insights with practical policy analysis, particularly in the context of EU external engagement and global environmental governance.
Publications highlight themes such as the EU’s evolving climate diplomacy, Arctic policy discourse, and strategic responses to shifting global power dynamics. His interdisciplinary approach integrates actorness theory, policy coherence, and comparative regionalism, contributing to debates on the EU’s role in a multipolar world.
