Dr. phil. Siegfried Schieder is currently serving as Acting Professor for International Politics and Political Economy at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg since October 1, 2024, where he holds the Chair of International Politics and Political Economy within the Institute of Political Science. Prior to this appointment, he was an academic associate at the Institute of Political Science at the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg from October 2016. His academic career includes previous professorial appointments at the Technical University of Darmstadt (2015-2016) and the University of Trier (2013-2015), where he held full professorships in International Relations.
Dr. Schieder earned his doctorate from the University of Trier in 2007 with a thesis on German foreign and European policy, graduating summa cum laude under the supervision of Prof. Hanns W. Maull. His educational background includes studies in political science, philosophy, and law (with a focus on international and European law) at the Universities of Vienna, Bologna, and the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin.
His research focuses on International Relations theory, particularly institutional approaches, with special emphasis on European Union studies, German foreign policy, and global governance. Dr. Schieder has made significant contributions to understanding the concepts of 'civilian power' in German foreign policy, European solidarity mechanisms, and the theoretical frameworks of international relations. His work often examines the intersection of theoretical approaches with practical foreign policy challenges, particularly regarding EU crisis management and international cooperation.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on contemporary geopolitical challenges, particularly the Ukraine-Russia conflict and its implications for international relations theory, as well as continued exploration of institutional approaches to understanding European integration and foreign policy. His work demonstrates an evolving research trajectory from theoretical frameworks toward applied analysis of current geopolitical crises.
- Jean Monnet Fellowship from the European University Institute (2009/2010 academic year)
Dr. Schieder has supervised over 80 MA and BA theses at Heidelberg University, covering diverse topics in international relations, European politics, and comparative foreign policy. His teaching portfolio includes courses on international organizations, global governance, German foreign policy, and European integration. He has received research funding for projects including the DFG Collaborative Research Center 600 'Foreignness and Poverty' (2005-2009) with a sub-project grant of 320,000 euros, and the PolitikON project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (750,000 euros).
