Dr. Shu-Chi Yeh is an Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center with primary appointment in the Department of Orthopaedics, Center for Musculoskeletal Research, and joint appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Pharmacology and Physiology within the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Her laboratory focuses on developing and applying intravital imaging-based approaches to study the bone marrow microenvironment and its regulatory roles in hematopoietic and skeletal stem cells, particularly in the context of clonal hematopoiesis and Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS).
Dr. Yeh earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from McMaster University in 2015 and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital's Wellman Center for Photomedicine. Her research has led to significant advancements in intravital imaging techniques for studying bone remodeling, hematopoietic stem cell niches, and the bone marrow microenvironment. Her work has been published in high-impact journals including Nature, Nature Methods, and PNAS, with recent publications focusing on clonal hematopoiesis, bone remodeling heterogeneity, and intravital pH sensing in the cancer microenvironment.
Dr. Yeh's laboratory maintains active research projects on the stem cell niche of myelodysplastic syndrome, the interplay of bone remodeling and the bone marrow microenvironment, intravital pH sensing of the cancer microenvironment, and visualizing the communicative network of bone marrow stromal cells. Her work has revealed heterogeneous bone turnover critical to hematopoietic stem cell expansion and discovered varied extracellular calcium concentrations tied to bone remodeling and primitive hematopoietic stem cells.
Dr. Yeh has received numerous awards including the Dean's Scholar Award, Outstanding Postdoctoral Award, Fund for Medical Discovery Award, and most recently the Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (2024) and Abstract Achievement Award from the American Society of Hematology (2024). Her research program has been recognized by several foundation and federal funding opportunities, including Dresner MDS Foundation, Evans MDS Foundation, National Institute of Health, and Department of Defense.
- Merit Abstract and Travel Award (2020)
- Fund for Medical Discovery Award (2018-2019)
- Outstanding Postdoctoral Award (2017)
- Dean's Scholar Award (2015-2017)
- Young investigator award, American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (2024)
- Abstract achievement award, American society of hematology (2024)
Dr. Yeh mentors several graduate students and research staff in her laboratory, including Cih-Li (Amy) Hong, Kevin Lee, and Melissa (Misa) MacLiesh. She collaborates with prominent researchers including Charles Lin at Massachusetts General Hospital, Laura Calvi, Edward Schwarz, and Chia-Lung Wu at the University of Rochester. Her laboratory maintains an active presence at scientific conferences and has received recognition for its contributions to understanding the bone marrow microenvironment in both health and disease.
