Shravan Vasishth is a Professor of Linguistics and Chair of Psycholinguistics and Neurolinguistics (Sentence Processing) at the University of Potsdam, Germany. He holds a PhD in Linguistics (2002) from Ohio State University, along with degrees in Japanese, Computer and Information Science, and Statistics. His research focuses on computational models of sentence comprehension in healthy and impaired populations, emphasizing systematic individual differences and Bayesian statistical methods.
Education:
- BA (Honours) in Japanese, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), India
- MA in Linguistics, JNU
- MS in Computer and Information Science, Ohio State University, USA
- MSc in Statistics, University of Sheffield, UK
- PhD in Linguistics, Ohio State University (2002)
Research Interests: Vasishth develops computational models of sentence processing, with recent work exploring cue-weighting variability and individual differences using Approximate Bayesian Computation. He co-authored Sentence Comprehension as a Cognitive Process: A Computational Approach (Cambridge UP) with Felix Engelmann, synthesizing two decades of lab research. His teaching emphasizes Bayesian data analysis for cognitive science, including MOOCs and tutorials.
Advising & Collaborations:
- Advised Felix Engelmann (co-author)
- Organizes the Statistical Methods in Language and Linguistics (SMLP) summer school
Personal Background: Born in New Delhi, Vasishth survived kidney failure and now undergoes hemodialysis. A former violinist and guitarist, he plays specialized classical guitars and practices Iaido and Shaolin Qi Gong. His academic genealogy traces back to early 20th-century German scientists.
