Dr. Shirley Rietdyk is a Professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Purdue University, with courtesy appointments in the School of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. Her research focuses on balance and mobility across adulthood, emphasizing fall prevention through experimental and modeling approaches. She holds a PhD from the University of Waterloo (1999).
- Director of DEI Committee for Health and Kinesiology (2023-present)
- Co-developed service-learning course with Dr. Haddad involving intergenerational work with older adults at University Place
- Recipient of National Science Foundation grants and other funding for research and entrepreneurship
- Authored >50 scientific papers, 100+ conference presentations, and a patent for postural sway analysis
Research interests include:
- Biomechanics of adaptive locomotion
- Motor control during obstacle negotiation
- Aging-related changes in gait stability
- Interactions between sensory systems and movement
Media features include CNBC, NPR, and ABC Radio Australia. Her Biomechanics Lab focuses on translating findings into fall-prevention interventions. Current projects explore relationships between physical activity, gait efficiency, and environmental risk assessment.
