Li-Shan Chou serves as Professor and Department Head of the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Purdue University, while also acting as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Gait and Posture. His research bridges engineering and clinical applications to address mobility impairments in aging populations and neurological patients.
His educational qualifications include:
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, 1995, University of Illinois at Chicago
- MS in Mechanical Engineering, 1990, University of Illinois at Chicago
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, 1987, Tatung Institute of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan
Dr. Chou pioneered dual-task gait paradigms to investigate cognitive-locomotor interactions, developing objective biomarkers for balance deficits in elderly and neurologically impaired populations. His work synthesizes biomechanical engineering principles with clinical rehabilitation, creating translational tools for fall risk assessment and remote monitoring through wearable sensor technology. His research directly supports HHS Healthy Lifestyles initiatives and advances kinesiology through motor control and biomechanics frameworks.
With over 130 peer-reviewed publications and 220 conference abstracts, his NIH-, CDC-, and DOD-funded research has established clinical protocols adopted in gait laboratories worldwide. He has delivered more than 100 invited lectures on biomechanical assessment methodologies.
Dr. Chou maintains active leadership in professional societies including the American Society of Biomechanics, International Society of Biomechanics, International Society for Posture and Gait Research, American College of Sports Medicine, and National Academy of Kinesiology.
