Dr. Jonathan Singer is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba, where he conducts research on the neuromechanical basis of human stability and mobility. His work focuses on understanding postural control and dynamic stability in aging and clinical populations such as stroke survivors, aiming to reduce fall risk and improve independence.
His research interests include:
- Biomechanics and Neuromechanics
- Postural Control and Dynamic Stability
- Human Locomotion and Gait Analysis
- Ageing and Fall Prevention
- Stroke Rehabilitation and Motor Recovery
- Neuromotor Control and Compensatory Stepping
The recent publications highlight a consistent focus on stability control across aging and neurological conditions. His studies integrate biomechanical analysis with clinical populations, particularly examining mediolateral balance, reactive stepping, and force dynamics during locomotion and perturbations. Key methodologies include instrumented gait analysis, center of pressure measurements, and longitudinal modeling in stroke recovery.
Scientific awards and recognitions include:
- Students’ Teacher Recognition Award, University of Manitoba (2023)
- Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award, Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management (2018)
Dr. Singer has secured significant research funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), and Manitoba Medical Service Foundation (MMSF), supporting his work on mobility and stability interventions. He mentors graduate and undergraduate research students and is actively involved in teaching core courses such as Biomechanics, Advanced Biomechanics, and Quantitative Research Methods.
He is affiliated with research platforms including Google Scholar and ResearchGate and maintains an open invitation for new student researchers to join his lab.
