Dr. Shireen Kassam is a Visiting Professor at the University of Winchester’s Faculty of Health and Wellbeing and a Consultant Haematologist at King’s College Hospital, London. Specializing in lymphoma treatment, she pioneered the UK’s first university-based plant-based nutrition course and launched a lifestyle medicine program for cancer patients. Her research bridges haematology and nutrition, with a focus on chronic disease prevention through plant-based diets. She co-founded Plant-Based Health Professionals UK to promote evidence-based nutrition education. Dr. Kassam holds an MB BS, FRCPath, PhD, and DipIBLM, with over 20 years in clinical and academic roles.
Education and Career: Trained as a doctor in 2000, completed a PhD on selenium’s role in cancer chemotherapy. Former Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College Hospital. Developed courses on plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine at Winchester University. Authored/co-authored books like Plant-Based Nutrition in Clinical Practice (2022) and Eating Plant-Based (2022).
Research Interests: Integrating plant-based diets into clinical practice for chronic disease reversal, cancer survivorship, and sustainable healthcare. Active in lymphoma treatment research, dietary epidemiology, and healthcare policy advocacy. Key areas include food systems’ environmental impact and equitable access to nutrition education.
Publications: Over 80 peer-reviewed articles in haematology and nutrition, focusing on plant-based diets’ clinical applications, lymphoma treatment efficacy, and public health implications. Recent work addresses red meat reduction in hospitals and avian influenza control through reduced animal farming.
Awards and Memberships: Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath, 2008), Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, 2003). Serves on the Vegan Society’s Research Advisory Committee and chairs Plant-Based Health Professionals UK. Recognized for contributions to lifestyle medicine and global health.
Grants and Collaborations: Collaborates with NHS institutions on dietary interventions. Funded research on plant-based diets for ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, and migraine management. Co-founded Plant Based Health Online, the UK’s first regulated lifestyle medicine service.
