معرفی
Alicja Wolk is a Senior Professor of Nutritional Epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. She leads the Unit of Cardiovascular and Nutritional Epidemiology within the Institute of Environmental Medicine. Her research focuses on lifestyle factors (diet, physical activity) and their association with chronic diseases (cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes), healthy aging, and planetary health. She has established and developed two major population-based cohorts: the Cohort of Swedish Men and the Swedish Mammography Cohort, which include over 100,000 participants and a biobank with DNA and biospecimen samples. These cohorts are part of the national infrastructure SIMPLER, enabling studies on gene-environment interactions and biomarker discovery.
Education: Visiting scholar at Harvard School of Public Health (1995–1997); PhD in Human Nutrition/Clinical Epidemiology from Warsaw University (1987); MSc in Human Nutrition (Warsaw University, 1974).
Research Interests: Wolk’s work integrates epidemiology, nutrition, and genetics to explore modifiable risk factors for chronic diseases. Key areas include dietary patterns (plant-based diets, fermented foods), environmental contaminants, and the impact of lifestyle on disease prevention. She also investigates genetic susceptibility to cancer and the environmental sustainability of dietary choices.
Grants & Awards: Recognitions include the Distinguished Professor Award (Karolinska Institutet, 2010), Strategic Research Award (2007–2012), and inclusion in AcademiaNet. She is ranked among Sweden’s top medicine scientists (2022). Wolk serves on the Prevention & Population Research Committee of Cancer Research UK and chairs international consortia like the Cohort Consortium for Diet and Cancer.
Labs/Teams: Directs the SIMPLER research infrastructure and collaborates globally through initiatives like the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) and the Ovarian Cancer Cohort Consortium (OC3).
