Dr. Shin-Yi (Chloe) Chiou is an Associate Professor in Motor Control and Rehabilitation at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham, UK. She holds a BSc in Physical Therapy from China Medical University, Taiwan, a PhD in Physiotherapy from National Yang-Ming University, Taiwan, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from the University of Birmingham. She joined the University of Birmingham as a lecturer in May 2018 after serving as a post-doctoral research associate at Imperial College London. Her research is centered on understanding motor cortical involvement in trunk control, particularly in older adults and individuals with spinal cord injury.

Dr. Chiou's research interests include motor control, rehabilitation science, neurophysiology, and the neural adaptations following spinal cord injury and ageing. She employs neurophysiological tools such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), peripheral electrical stimulation, and electromyography (EMG) to investigate movement control and its alterations due to injury or ageing. Her work aims to enhance therapeutic exercise effectiveness through accessible and affordable rehabilitation methods, with a focus on neuromodulatory strategies and novel neuroimaging approaches. She is particularly interested in neurological physiotherapy, low back pain, postural control, and age-related neural changes.
Her recent publications highlight a strong trend in rehabilitation technologies and neurophysiological assessment. Her work spans from developing home-based arm cycling interventions for spinal cord injury patients to exploring smartphone-based balance training for older adults. She frequently investigates corticospinal excitability, trunk muscle activation, and postural control using advanced techniques like high-density EMG. Her research bridges clinical application with fundamental neuroscience, aiming to translate findings into practical rehabilitation strategies.
Dr. Chiou is an active member of the scientific community, serving as a reviewer for journals such as Gait & Posture, Experimental Brain Research, and BMJ Open. She is affiliated with the Society for Neuroscience and the Physiological Society.
She contributes to teaching in BSc and MSc programs in Physiotherapy and Sport and Exercise Sciences and is open to supervising master's and doctoral students in her research areas. Her research group, Motor Control and Rehabilitation, conducts studies on brain plasticity, trunk motor control, and novel technologies in physiotherapy. She leads research on optimizing surgical outcomes and uses neuroimaging to understand neural structure-function relationships.
