Shima Salehi is a Research Assistant Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education and director of the IDEAL research lab, which focuses on inclusivity, diversity, equity, and access in learning communities. She also serves as a member of the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance.
- Education: PhD in Learning Sciences (minor in Psychology) from Stanford University; BS in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Iran.
Dr. Salehi’s research centers on effective and inclusive STEM education. She examines how instructional practices can reduce demographic performance gaps and enhance equity in science and engineering courses. Her work includes developing frameworks for problem-solving practices, designing instructional activities, and analyzing pandemic impacts on learning science.
Recent trends in her publications include AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) for problem-solving, equity-focused instructional templates, learning analytics in puzzle games, and pandemic-induced challenges in STEM education. Her teaching involves courses like Directed Reading in Education and Honors Research.
Advising: She mentors doctoral students (Josh Arens, Alessandra Napoli, L'Nard Tufts) and master’s students (Ryan Pilat), with additional doctoral program advisees including Ramya Kumar, Angel Rivera, and Marcos Rojas Pino.
Labs & Teams: She leads the IDEAL research lab, a key component of Stanford’s IDEAL initiative, and collaborates with STEM instructors to implement inclusive teaching strategies.
