Shiguang Ma is an Associate Professor in the School of Business at the University of Wollongong. He joined the institution in 2008 after holding academic positions at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, Hong Kong University, Monash University, and Curtin University. Previously, he worked as a deputy manager in the Investment Banking Branch of Northern International Trust and Investment Corp. He holds a PhD in Finance and Economics from the University of Adelaide and degrees in economics and commerce from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics.
His research focuses on corporate finance, initial public offerings, corporate governance, political connections, earnings management, and emerging markets, particularly China. He has published over 60 journal articles, book chapters, and books in English and Chinese. His work has appeared in prestigious journals such as Research Policy, Journal of Business Ethics, and European Accounting Review.
Dr. Ma teaches courses in finance, banking, and business statistics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has mentored approximately 18 PhD, Masters, and Honours students in finance-related fields. He currently supervises research on topics like the impact of the pandemic on sustainable development goals in Australian and Chinese firms.
He secured a 2024 internal grant from the University of Wollongong for 'Targeted Researcher Support.' His professional service includes peer reviewing for journals such as Accounting and Finance, Journal of Applied Economics, and Pacific Basin Finance Journal.
His work bridges theoretical and practical finance, emphasizing corporate governance challenges in emerging markets and the role of institutional investors in fostering innovation and transparency. He actively explores intersections between environmental engagement, political legitimacy, and financial accountability in global business contexts.
