Sheryl Bailey is the Assistant Chair of the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music, where she has taught since 2000. She is a renowned jazz guitarist, educator, and composer, recognized for her work in bebop, improvisation, and contemporary jazz. Her roles include leadership in the Guitar Department, adjunct teaching at The Collective School of Music in NYC, and hosting masterclasses globally.
Education: B.M. in Music Business from Berklee College of Music (1988).
Research interests focus on advancing guitar pedagogy, harmonic concepts, and improvisation techniques. Her educational materials, such as Moveable Shapes and the Bebop Dojo Bootcamp series, are widely used. She has released 11 albums, including Departure (2019), and collaborates with artists like Anat Cohen and David Krakauer.
Notable awards include multiple Downbeat Critics Poll recognitions and a Grammy nomination for Triple Helix (2019). She also received the BRIO arts grant (2005) and was a Thelonious Monk Competition finalist (1998).
Teaching emphasizes practical skills for professional musicians, including performance readiness, ear training, and fretboard mastery. Her courses cover harmonic expansion, bebop language, and stylistic versatility across genres.
