Dr. Sherry Stewart is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University, also affiliated with the Departments of Psychology and Neuroscience, and Community Health and Epidemiology. Her research focuses on psychological factors contributing to addictive behaviors, comorbid mental health and addictions, and developing treatments for these conditions. She holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from McGill University and a B.Sc. in Psychology from Dalhousie University.
Her research interests include anxiety sensitivity, substance use motives, trauma exposure impacts, and comorbidity mechanisms. She leads the Center for Addiction Research at Dalhousie and holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Addictions and Mental Health (2023–2030). Notable awards include the Donald O Hebb Award (2023) and Royal Society of Canada Fellowship (2018).
Dr. Stewart’s publications address cannabis use patterns in trauma-exposed individuals, alcohol use motives, and intervention efficacy. She mentors students and leads national initiatives like the Canadian Research Initiative in Substance Use (CRISM). She contributes to editorial boards of journals like Behavioral Therapy and Psychology of Addictive Behaviors.
