Shelly L. Miller is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder and a faculty member of the interdisciplinary Environmental Engineering Program. She specializes in urban and indoor air quality, with a focus on engineering controls (e.g., filtration, UV germicidal irradiation) to improve health and reduce energy consumption. Her research addresses air pollution health effects, source apportionment, HVAC system design, and environmental justice in underserved communities. Miller has led studies on odor source identification in Denver, coarse particulate matter health impacts, and wildfire smoke mitigation.
- Education: B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College; M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UC Berkeley
Her research interests span microbial environments, infectious disease transmission (e.g., SARS-CoV-2), and community-driven air quality solutions. She has secured funding from agencies like the EPA, CDC, NIH, and NSF, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. Awards include the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship (1996) and EPA Environmental Achievement Award (2000).
Major projects include the Colorado Coarse Rural Urban Sources and Health (CCRUSH) study and the Denver Aerosol Sources and Health (DASH) study. Miller also collaborates on social justice initiatives like the NSF-funded Social Justice and Environmental Quality Project. Her work integrates technical innovation with community engagement to address systemic environmental inequities.
