Kirsten Koehler, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research focuses on improving exposure assessment methods to inform occupational and environmental health policy. She leads studies on direct-reading instrumentation, low-cost sensor networks, and spatiotemporal exposure mapping. Her work addresses air pollution, climate change impacts, and environmental justice, with applications in both occupational and community settings.

Research Interests: Aerosol monitoring, spatial statistics, extreme heat, and particulate matter exposure in vulnerable populations. Her lab develops novel samplers and analytical frameworks to quantify indoor/outdoor air pollution effects on health, with projects like the Particulate Exposures in Asthmatic Kids (PEAK) study and evaluations of cool roof interventions to mitigate urban heat.
Awards: Recipient of the David L. Swift Award (2020), Jim D’Arcy Award (2021), and induction into Delta Omega (2019). Her work has been funded by NIOSH, EPA, and NIEHS, focusing on COPD, asthma exacerbations, and occupational hazard mapping.
Grants/Projects: Leads studies like the CLEAN AIR 2 Trial for COPD patients, Environmental Monitoring Near Fossil Infrastructure, and Home Environment and Re-hospitalization in COPD. Collaborates on climate change mitigation strategies and indoor air quality improvements in Baltimore.
