Professor Paul Monks is a leading academic in Atmospheric Chemistry and Earth Observation Science at the University of Leicester, serving as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on air quality, pollution dynamics, and environmental policy, with notable contributions to understanding the impacts of biomass burning, urban emissions, and pandemic-related lockdowns on atmospheric composition. He chairs the NERC committee and advises UK and international bodies on environmental science.
Research Interests: Monks’ work spans air pollution analysis, climate change mitigation, and innovative Earth Observation techniques. He pioneers the use of exhaled breath volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for diagnosing respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD. His studies also address formaldehyde exposure risks, bacterial responses to pollutants, and the health implications of indoor air quality in clinical settings.
Awards & Roles: A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Royal Meteorological Society, Monks holds key roles including UK representative on the Commission for Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution (ICACGP), and member of the Royal Society’s Global Environmental Research Committee. His leadership extends to Defra’s Air Quality Expert Group and Innovate UK’s Satellite Applications Advisory Group.
Grants & Labs: Monks leads large-scale initiatives such as the APHH-Beijing program studying pollution in Chinese megacities and the JULIAC field campaign in Germany. His team develops advanced sampling technologies like the ReCIVA breath sampler and LabPipe bioinformatics toolkit. Current projects investigate aerosol formation, VOC dispersion modeling, and the intersection of air pollution with bacterial pathogenesis.
Future Work: Ongoing research includes real-time NO₂ monitoring via satellite (e.g., TROPOMI), assessing urban tree efficacy in reducing particulate matter, and exploring ‘dead cert’ decomposition VOCs for forensic applications. He advocates for policy-driven solutions to align air quality improvements with climate change goals.
