Dr Michael Wilde is a Lecturer in Environmental & Analytical Chemistry at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Plymouth. He holds dual roles as a CAMS Lecturer in Bioanalytical Measurement and Volatolomics and is actively involved in the Community for Analytical Measurement Science (CAMS), a UK/Ireland industry-academia network addressing analytical measurement challenges. His research focuses on bioanalytical techniques, environmental chemistry, and the application of advanced analytical methods in clinical diagnostics and environmental monitoring.
Teaching responsibilities include Organic Chemistry, Structural Determination, Analytical Techniques, and Environmental Science. He emphasizes accuracy, quality control, and advanced methods like chemometrics in his pedagogy. Research interests span volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in clinical and environmental settings, breathomics for disease diagnosis, and standardizing sampling protocols for pediatric and respiratory patient cohorts.
Dr Wilde collaborates with industry partners through CAMS' MSI (Measurement Science Institute) and BEAM (Building Effective Analytical Measurement) initiatives, addressing challenges in sensor technology, data analytics, and novel instrumentation. His work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health and environmental sustainability.
Key projects include developing diagnostic signatures for cardiorespiratory conditions via exhaled breath metabolites, assessing hospital indoor air quality impacts on healthcare workers, and exploring gut-lung axis interactions in viral infections. He advocates for standardized breath sampling devices like ReCIVA and has published extensively on VOC analysis methodologies.
