Shelly Hokanson

Shelly Hokanson is an Associate Professor of Interactive Design at James Madison University's School of Media Arts and Design (SMAD). She has held this position since 2011, previously teaching at Prairie State College for a decade. Her expertise spans web development, graphic design, and photography. She coordinates the Interactive Design concentration and has led various university committees, including curriculum development and student accountability initiatives.

Education: MFA in Independent Film & Digital Imaging (Governors State University, 2012), M.Ed. (University of Illinois, 2005), B.B.A. in Computer Information Systems (Robert Morris College, 1997). Additional coursework in photography and art (Prairie State College).

Research & Interests: Technical proficiency in JavaScript, PHP, WordPress, and UX design, alongside creative pursuits in portraiture, wildlife photography, and interactive media. Active in open-source tools and mobile technologies.

Awards & Certifications: Multiple Hootsuite certifications, CIW/CompTIA credentials, and recognition for academic excellence. Volunteer raptor handler and educator at the Wildlife Center of Virginia.

Leadership Roles: Study Abroad Co-Director, SMAD Curriculum Committee member, and advisor to the SMAD Club. Extensive service on faculty senates and technology planning committees.
