Dr. Shelley McConnell serves as the Charles D, Sarah A. and John D. Munsil Associate Professor of Political Science at St. Lawrence University, holding a faculty position in the Department of Political Science (Government).
Her research specializes in democratic development within impoverished nations, with concentrated focus on Latin America. Additional scholarly themes encompass conflict resolution mechanisms, revolutionary movements, election observation protocols, campaign finance regulations, and the institutional role of the Organization of American States in regional governance.
Fieldwork constitutes a significant component of her expertise, having collaborated with former President Jimmy Carter to visit all Latin American nations except Paraguay. Her immersive experiences include residence in Nicaragua and extended research periods in Costa Rica and Mexico. As an amateur “ruin hound,” she has systematically explored major archaeological sites across Aztec, Mayan, Incan, Mixtec, and Toltec civilizations while maintaining professional proficiency in Spanish with working knowledge of Portuguese and French.
