Shawna Ferris is a Professor and Program Coordinator in Women's and Gender Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Manitoba. Her work bridges academic scholarship with community activism, focusing on sex work/prostitution studies, critical race studies, and anti-violence feminist activism.
Her research interrogates the ethics of community-based research, emphasizing the importance of collaborative methodologies that center marginalized voices. She co-edited the 2019 volume Sex Work Activism in Canada and has led long-standing projects like the Sex Work Activist Histories Project (SWAHP) and the Ecosystems for Community Research and Recordkeeping (ECRR), which prioritize decolonizing and anti-oppressive practices.
Recent work trends include decolonizing archival practices, community-led research ethics, and spatial analysis of sex work in Canadian cities. Her publications in journals like Archivaria and International Journal of Qualitative Methods highlight institutional challenges for sensitive research and the role of recordkeeping in advocacy.
