Shawn L. Spurgeon, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Counselor Education and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at St. Mary’s University. He holds a Ph.D. from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2002) and has over 50 national and regional conference presentations. His research focuses on African American male development and counselor identity.
Research interests include clinical mental health counseling, ethics, and supervision practices. His work emphasizes multicultural competence and community engagement.
Awards highlight leadership in counseling ethics and community service, including recognition from the American Counseling Association and multiple universities.
Licensed in Texas, Tennessee, and North Carolina, he maintains active clinical practice and supervision roles.
