Sharron Hall is a Research Coordinator at the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle, where she works with the Aboriginal ear health research team at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). Her position focuses on immunology and microbiology research with particular emphasis on ear health and Aboriginal health outcomes.
Hall holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Newcastle and has maintained a continuous research career since 1983, beginning as a Hospital Scientist at Hunter New England Health in the Hunter Area Pathology Service, Immunology Department. Her professional journey demonstrates sustained commitment to immunological research in clinical settings.
Her research program centers on the immunology of the upper respiratory tract, with specialized expertise in immune function in elite athletes, infants at risk of sudden infant death, and children with otitis media with effusion. She has developed significant methodological expertise in using saliva for mucosal immune function studies, conducting pathology research related to Aboriginal Health, and developing enzyme-linked immuno assays. Her administrative capabilities include comprehensive management of research funds and projects, along with ethics and safety applications and training new staff members.
Analysis of Hall's publication record reveals a consistent research trajectory focused on inflammatory responses across multiple clinical contexts. Her work spans immunology, otolaryngology, nephrology, and obstetrics, with particular attention to health disparities affecting Indigenous Australian populations. A unifying theme throughout her research is the investigation of biomarkers, especially immune markers in bodily fluids, to understand disease mechanisms and improve clinical outcomes. Her recent work shows increasing emphasis on Aboriginal health research, particularly regarding ear disease and hearing problems in Indigenous children.
Hall serves as a key investigator on significant research initiatives, including a 2024 Hunter Medical Research Institute grant ($20,000) and a major 2023 NSW Ministry of Health grant ($500,000), both addressing 'Genomic surveillance of bacterial strains causing ear disease and upper respiratory illnesses in Hunter New England children and young people.' These projects involve collaboration with multiple investigators including Dr. Guy Cameron, Professor Kelvin Kong, and several Aboriginal researchers.
Based at Room HMRI 4607 in the Hunter Medical Research Institute building, Hall works within a multidisciplinary team structure that intentionally includes both Aboriginal and non-Indigenous researchers. Her current projects reflect deep community engagement, particularly through initiatives like the Gomeroi gaaynggal program which empowers Aboriginal communities to understand health implications of research in pregnancy. Her work demonstrates strong commitment to translational research that addresses real health disparities in Indigenous communities.
