Guy Cameron is a proud Aboriginal man from the Wailwan people with strong family connections to Wongaibon and Dainggatti. He currently holds multiple academic positions at the University of Newcastle including Indigenous Imaging Fellow at the School of Psychological Sciences, Microbiomic ECR Fellow at the School of Medicine and Public Health, and Casual Academic at the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy. As an early career researcher, he works at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) under Professor Kelvin Kong's research team and is supervised by Professor Michael Breakspear for his imaging fellowship.
His primary research interests focus on immunology and microbiology, particularly investigating immune pathways in respiratory diseases like asthma and COPD, urinary tract infections, and chronic ear infections affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. He has strong expertise in pre-clinical models of disease and has developed significant skills in health audits related to respiratory admissions and emergency department presentations. His work is deeply informed by his Indigenous heritage and commitment to improving healthcare for Aboriginal communities through biomedical, clinical, and community-driven approaches.
An analysis of his publications reveals a consistent trajectory from fundamental immunological research toward increasingly community-engaged and Indigenous-focused health research. While his earlier work focused on mechanistic studies of immune pathways in respiratory and kidney diseases, his recent publications demonstrate a strong pivot toward addressing health disparities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly in ear health, respiratory conditions, and STEM education. His research integrates basic science with community consultation and co-design approaches.
- Indigenous STEM Professional Career Achievement Award from the CSIRO and BHP Foundation (2021)
Dr. Cameron actively supervises two professional doctorate students researching otitis media and ENT/respiratory presentations at John Hunter Hospital. He has successfully secured over $3.3 million in research funding across 14 grants, including significant awards from NHMRC, Medical Research Futures Fund, and Hunter Medical Research Institute. His current projects address Aboriginal women's asthma during pregnancy, middle ear disease models, genomic surveillance of ear infection pathogens, and Indigenous plant healing properties. Beyond research, he chairs the Indigenous Student Engagement Committee and contributes to curriculum indigenisation efforts.
Dr. Cameron leads the Deadly Images initiative which fosters Indigenous collaboration and ownership in imaging research. He works closely with the Wollotuka Institute to support Indigenous students and maintains active involvement with community panels that ensure Aboriginal people have meaningful input into health research priorities and methodologies. His vision is to assemble a multidisciplinary team that tackles major health challenges facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through integrated biomedical, clinical, and community approaches.
