Professor Nathan Bartlett is an academic at the University of Newcastle, Australia, serving as a Professor and head of the Viral Immunology and Respiratory Disease group at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). He holds an honorary appointment at Imperial College London. His research focuses on respiratory viruses, particularly rhinovirus and SARS-CoV-2, aiming to develop therapies like a nasal spray to boost innate immunity in the upper airways, preventing severe lung infections. This treatment targets high-risk groups such as asthma patients and the immunocompromised.
Educationally, he earned a PhD and BSc (Honours) from Deakin University. His career includes postdoctoral work at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London, where he studied viral vector vaccines and asthma exacerbations. He relocated to Newcastle in 2015 to continue translational research on respiratory viruses.
Key research interests include viral immunology, innate immunity mechanisms, and the interplay between respiratory viruses and chronic conditions like asthma. His work has led to patents for treatments under development and collaborations with industry partners like Ena Respiratory.
He has secured funding from HMRI, Asthma Australia, NHMRC, and various industry grants. His contributions include over 90 journal articles, book chapters, and editorships (e.g., American Journal of Physiology-Lung). Future research directions include exploring therapies for emerging viruses and optimizing antiviral strategies.
