Dr. Jemma Mayall is a Lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy at the University of Newcastle, affiliated with the Immune Health Program at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). Her research focuses on innate immune responses in respiratory and reproductive tract infections, particularly Chlamydia and influenza, aiming to identify therapeutic targets for diseases like asthma and chronic pelvic pain. She holds a PhD from the University of Newcastle and has received awards including the 2016 ICI Travel Award and 2015 ASI Travel Award.
Her research investigates how innate immune responses contribute to chronic diseases, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and asthma, and how these can be modulated. Key areas include iron metabolism’s role in viral infections, hormonal influences on asthma severity, and mechanisms of COPD exacerbations. Dr. Mayall has secured grants totaling over $1.4M, including an NHMRC Ideas Grant for inflammasome research.
Dr. Mayall supervises PhD students in projects like asthma pathogenesis, COPD, and Chlamydia-induced pelvic pain. She teaches courses in human infection, immunity, and pathophysiology. Her work spans experimental models, translational research, and collaborations with industry for occupational health solutions.
