Associate Professor Sharon Latimer is a Principal Research Fellow at the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Wiser Wound Care and an academic within the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University. With over two decades of clinical experience in caring for older patients, she has established herself as a leading researcher in wound care and patient safety.
Her research focuses on clinically relevant issues, particularly the prevention of pressure injuries and the understanding and management of skin failure at the end-of-life. Her work spans critical care, acute care, and palliative care settings, aiming to improve patient outcomes through evidence-based practice.
Sharon Latimer's research into end-of-life wounds, though underfunded, has had significant global impact, contributing to policy changes in the United States and the development of international wound assessment standards. Her recent work in intensive care has fostered national collaborations and trained clinical staff in research methods.
She is recognized as an expert in her field, having been invited to participate in international roundtables, and her journey from clinical nursing to a PhD and research leadership exemplifies her commitment to advancing healthcare through research.
As a mentor, she has inspired and trained ICU nurses in research, many of whom have pursued further opportunities in academic and research centers.
