Dr. Sharon James is a Research Fellow and Project Manager in the Department of General Practice at Monash University, affiliated with the Sexual and Reproductive Health for Women in Primary Care (SPHERE) Centre of Research Excellence. She also leads the Australian Contraception and Abortion Primary Care Practitioner Support (AusCAPPS) Network. With 25 years of experience as a primary health care nurse and Board Director of the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association, her work focuses on women’s health, lifestyle risk communication, and preventive care in primary care settings.
Education: She holds a PhD in Lifestyle Risk Communication by Nurses in Australian General Practice (University of Wollongong, 2021), an MPH (University of Wollongong), a Grad Dip OHSN (University of Southern Queensland), and a BN (University of Sydney).
Research Interests: Her work spans women’s health, lifestyle risk management, interconception care, and nursing roles in primary care. She employs qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to address gaps in healthcare communication, contraceptive provision, and interconception health strategies.
Awards: Dr. James has received prestigious awards including the AAAPC Travelling Fellowship (2021), Monash University Faculty of Medicine Fellowship (2024), and the Emerging Nurse Researcher/Scholar Award (2025). She has also secured grants from SPHERE CRE and the Women's Health Research Network.
Grants/Projects: She leads and collaborates on projects such as the National Multidisciplinary Primary Care Research Consortium and studies on contraceptive access and interconception care for general practice nurses.
Labs/Teams: Active in the SPHERE CRE and AusCAPPS Network, she engages in policy advocacy and interdisciplinary research to improve healthcare outcomes for women and vulnerable populations.
