Dr Sharon Bickle is a Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Southern Queensland, affiliated with the School of Humanities and Communication. Her research centers on women's writing, particularly 19th-century literature, life-writing, and the collaborative work of Michael Field. She is an active scholar, teacher, and supervisor, contributing to feminist, queer, and cultural studies.
Sharon Bickle earned her PhD from Monash University and holds advanced degrees from The University of Queensland and The University of Melbourne. Her research interests include Victorian and Neo-Victorian literature, steampunk, Young Adult Fiction, feminist and queer theory, and digital humanities. She has published extensively on Michael Field, textual editing, and contemporary literary criticism.
Her recent scholarly and public-facing articles span topics like Zadie Smith’s The Fraud, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, cancel culture and Dr Seuss, and Hannah Kent’s memoir. These works reflect a sustained engagement with questions of identity, representation, and literary legacy. Her publications reveal a trajectory focused on recovering marginalized voices and interrogating cultural narratives.
She has received no explicitly listed scientific awards, but her editorial roles are significant. She serves as consulting editor for The Latchkey: A Journal of New Woman Writing and is on the editorial boards of Hecate and Australian Women’s Book Review. She is a member of the Australian Women's and Gender Studies Association (AWGSA) and the Australasian Victorian Studies Association (AVSA), having previously served as Vice President of AWGSA.
Bickle supervises doctoral students on diverse topics including Virginia Woolf, Queensland governors’ wives, cross-cultural translation, and disability in literature. She teaches courses such as Introduction to Literature, Gothic Literature, and Screening Literature. She is currently co-authoring a biography of Michael Field and contributing to the digital project The Diaries of Michael Field. She is actively involved in academic and public discourse, with frequent contributions to The Conversation.
