Professor Shareen Doak is Professor of Genotoxicology and Cancer at Swansea University Medical School within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. She serves as co-lead of the In Vitro Toxicology Group and holds prestigious positions including Editor-in-Chief for Mutagenesis. Professor Doak coordinates the €13Million H2020 PATROLS project and directs the €12Million Celtic Advanced Life Science Innovation Network (CALIN), an Ireland-Wales INTERREG initiative focused on building innovation bridges in life sciences.
Her research program focuses on the genotoxic profiles of engineered nanomaterials, mechanisms of DNA damage, and development of advanced 3D culture models for safety assessment to reduce animal testing. In prostate cancer research, she investigates molecular mechanisms of disease progression to identify prognostic biomarker panels for improved clinical management. Her work spans genetic toxicology, nanotoxicology, DNA damage mechanisms, and molecular biology of prostate cancer, with significant implications for nanomaterial safety assessment and cancer diagnostics.
Professor Doak's recent publications demonstrate her leadership in adapting OECD test guidelines for nanomaterials, developing advanced in vitro models, and investigating nanomaterial genotoxicity using innovative approaches. Her research shows consistent focus on improving safety assessment methodologies while addressing critical gaps in understanding nanomaterial-biological interactions.
She has received notable recognition including being an invited Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and an elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (FLSW). She serves on the UK Government Committee on Mutagenicity (COM) and is a UK and EUROTOX Registered Toxicologist. Professor Doak's leadership in major international projects and collaborations continues to advance scientific understanding in nanotoxicology and cancer research, with practical applications in healthcare and environmental safety.
