Shannon Murphy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theater at Temple University's School of Theater, Film and Media Arts. She joined Temple in Fall 2021 and holds adjunct teaching roles at Drexel University, Stockton University, and University of the Arts (UArts). Her primary specialization is in dance education and movement practices, particularly through the Franklin Method. She earned her MFA in Dance from the University of the Arts.
Her research focuses on somatic practices that enhance dancer resilience and injury prevention, reflected in her role as Curricular Head of Body Pathways at UArts. Murphy's creative work spans contemporary concert dance, musical theater choreography, improvisational scores, and performance art, with recent performances at the Painted Bride Art Center and Penn Museum. Her artistic practice emphasizes biological metaphors, sensate exploration, and communal resilience-building through movement.
She contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations, bridging performance art with educational methodologies. Her teaching extends to curricular development aimed at fostering anatomical awareness and holistic dancer health.
