Tiffany Mills serves as the Director of Dance at Lewis & Clark College, a position she assumed in 2024. Hailing from New York City where she had been based since 1995, Mills brings over two decades of professional dance experience to her academic role.
Mills founded the Tiffany Mills Company as a nonprofit in 2000, creating dance-theater work centered on diverse human relationships and grounded in partnering/improvisation. Her choreographic approach draws out emotional and physical differences among dancers, with equal attention to small gestures and bold movements. She views the stage as a canvas, playing with radical juxtaposition, extreme perspective, and layered textures.
Her recent works include the Viola Trilogy created in collaboration with Ensemble Ipse, featuring pieces like 'Poem from Exile,' 'Doa Persembunyian - A Prayer for Refuge,' and 'Vapor/Blood.' These works explore themes of visibility, perception, refuge, and the power of sight in both literal and metaphorical senses. Her choreography integrates partnering, improvisation, and somatic modalities to foster self-exploration and human vulnerability.
Mills has significantly contributed to the dance program at Lewis & Clark, helping establish a Dance Concentration Major in the Theatre Department (previously only offering a Dance Minor). She emphasizes nurturing individual artistry while developing collaborative capacity, preparing students for diverse careers in dance beyond traditional company models.
Her community engagement extends beyond campus through workshops and performances that connect students with professional dance practices. Mills continues to direct her New York-based company remotely while building the dance program at Lewis & Clark.
