Mitch Reyes is a Professor of Rhetoric and Media Studies at Lewis & Clark College, located in Portland, Oregon. He holds a PhD in Communication Arts and Sciences from Penn State University (2000) and a BS in Mathematics from Willamette University (1997). His academic roles include Chair of the Department of Rhetoric and Media Studies, Director of the College Prep Program (supporting first-generation/BIPoC students), and Director of Public Memory Studies. Reyes specializes in the rhetorical analysis of science/mathematics and collective memory practices, focusing on how mathematical discourse shapes culture and how groups construct shared historical narratives.
His research bridges rhetoric with interdisciplinary fields like public memory studies, science communication, and critical mathematics studies. Notable works include Global Memoryscapes (2011) and Arguing with Numbers (2021). Reyes teaches courses on rhetorical theory, public discourse, and the rhetoric of science, emphasizing critical engagement with media and data. He actively mentors students through capstone thesis projects and summer research collaborations, such as a study on the Gay Liberation Monument presented at a national conference.
