Dr. Shannon Lowe is an Associate Professor of Bassoon and Aural Skills at the University of Florida's School of Music, her alma mater. She previously held the same rank at Valdosta State University. As an accomplished performer, she serves as principal bassoonist of the Albany Symphony Orchestra and acting principal of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra. Her performance history includes engagements with the Jacksonville Symphony, Florida Orchestra, and others. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts from SUNY Stony Brook (studying under Frank Morelli) and degrees from the University of Florida (under Arnold Irchai and Kim Woolly). A Fox Artist, she released the album A Musical Bouquet with MSR Classics, featuring works for bassoon and strings.
Education highlights include a D.M.A. in Bassoon Performance and dual degrees from UF. Her professional activities include masterclasses at conferences like the Midwest Clinic and work with composers on new bassoon repertoire. Notable achievements include her role in the Valdosta Symphony's 2014 American Prize win and an unusual performance of Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto via speakerphone on a flight. She maintains strong ties to her musical heritage, including family links to the Cleveland Orchestra and collaborations with prominent musicians.
Teaching and outreach are central to her career, with a focus on pedagogy and aural skills. She actively commissions new works and advocates for bassoon education through clinics and performances. Her musical inspirations span singers like Pavarotti and bassoonists such as Judith Leclair, reflecting her commitment to both classical tradition and modern expression.
